Finding Software Companies
Finding the correct software companies can be a challenge.
Start with directories to identify products.
For example, if your software would be in a directory of products for college human resources, then start with a trade magazine that is targeted to the college human resources professionals. They might issue a buyers guide or have a directory. One way to find a valid trade magazine is to use Gale Directory of Publications and Broadcast Media http://catalog.wccls.org/polaris/view.aspx?title=Gale+directory+of+publications
Also finding the right category can be difficult. Try this website
Globaspec- has categories http://www.globalspec.com/ProductFinder/Industrial_Engineering_Software.
DataQuest is now available from Gartner http://www.gartner.com/it/products/research/dataquest.jsp

Indeed (Job Website)

Although there are many job searching websites available, one of the easiest I have found to use is Indeed. This site searches thousands of company websites, job boards, newspapers and associations and makes searching these sources an absolute breeze. All you do is list the job title, keyword or company name and a location (if you want), and the site will list the jobs available with direct links to the original job posting giving you all the information you need in order to apply for the position. If you don't have a specific job title in mind, you can browse their listings of job categories or search listing by specific geographic locations. Also included in the site are salary charts and job trends. Check it out!

Portland Business Journal - for job hunters, executives, and researchers
The weekly newspaper, Portland Business Journal, (portland.bizjournals.com/portland/ ) is the main resource that discusses the local business news. The Beaverton Library subscribes to it, and reading it each week will help those who are job hunting, prospecting, or just interested in what's going on.
The online version is only a medium level of information, subscribers get full content of the articles. We do have a logon at the Beaverton library, because we are full subscribers. Ask at the Main Reference desk if you would like to be logged on as a subscriber, for free.
It has a careers section which highlights executive level jobs, and you can search bizjournals for keywords to locate articles of interest, for example, to prepare for an interview.
Here's how to search the archives of the Portland Business Journal
1) Go to portland.bizjournals.com
2) Click on News in the tabbed part, at top of webpage
3) Go to right and click (to the right of keyword search box) click search archive and enter keywords that you're interested in, like an officer's name, or a brand or company, or product, BUT include the word Portland!
This works 99% of the time. I tried portland software, and got mostly Portland results, with one Seattle Puget sound result. But for some reason it won't automatically let you search only one newsletter, that's why you have to enter Portland.

Insurance and Medicare Purchasing Decisions
This is an illustration of the catalog display. Clicking on a red book will tell it that you want to reserve a specific copy. This can be helpful when you see newer editions and older editions all blended in from library to library. The libraries that hold on to their old copies may have limited resources but many libraries purchase new copies. Just a quick tip but on to the main show: Insurance
There are many ways to shop for insurance.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners puts out several consumer guides to shopping for insurance, including Auto, Home, Life, Cancer, Long-Term, Deferred and Fixed Annuities, and Medigap.
The Beaverton City library furnishes ratings guide to Health Insurers , ratings guides to Property and Casualty Insurers, and ratings guide to Life and Annuity Insurers to you in the library's reference collection. They are located on the Index tables.
Medicare is another big decision time. Here is a book we get called All About Medicare that may clarify the structure of medicare benefits. The Social Security Handbook is another regularly purchased item that is based on the presentation of public domain data on the Social Security website.
Nolo Press's popular Social Security, Medicare and Government Pensions is another guide for consumers. Ask at the library for these and other resources on Insurance. To reserve a current copy, here's a tip: To distinguish between copies that one library may have that are from 2004 which are too old, review the tip up at top, which is to click on the red book for a specific hold on a specific copy.

It used to be in a book called Advanced Technology in the Pacific Northwest. Here is the location of yearly updated Electronics, Monitoring, Military, Computer Accessories, Chemicals, Industrial, Materials, Software and much more! It contains email addresses as well as data about the firms that is more specific than the familiar websites and free sources such as chamber, yellow pages, or other all inclusive databases. Oil on the Brain

Oil on the Brain is a smart, surprisingly funny account of the oil industry: the people, economies, and pipelines that bring us petroleum, brilliantly illuminating a world we encounter every day.
Americans buy ten thousand gallons of gasoline a second, without giving it much of a thought. Where does all this gas come from? Lisa Margonelli’s desire to learn took her on a one-hundred thousand mile journey from her local gas station to oil fields half a world away. In search of the truth behind the myths, she wriggled her way into some of the most off-limits places on earth: the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the New York Mercantile Exchange’s crude oil market, oil fields from Venezuela, to Texas, to Chad, and even an Iranian oil platform where the United States fought a forgotten one-day battle.
In a story by turns surreal and alarming, Margonelli meets lonely workers on a Texas drilling rig, an oil analyst who almost gave birth on the NYMEX trading floor, Chadian villagers who are said to wander the oil fields in the guise of lions, a Nigerian warlord who changed the world price of oil with a single cell phone call, and Shanghai bureaucrats who dream of creating a new Detroit.
Deftly piecing together the mammoth economy of oil, Margonelli finds a series of stark warning signs for American drivers. (Publisher Marketing)

Sector Analysis for Investment Clubs at the Library
Sector Analysis is a task investors do to make sense of many many smaller industries that all relate to one another. For example Energy as a sector includes Coal, Distribution, Petroleum, Power, Natual Gas, & other related lines of business.
Value Line Industry Report
Not only does Value Line have full-page reports on about 1,700 stocks, but there are also analysis on more than 90 industries. Location in Beaverton City Library on 2nd floor,
Index Table 1. Use the slim insert inside the cover of the Value Line, called Summary and Index, look at bottom half of front page, and those list page #s to the various Industries that are included in Ratings and Reports--the thicker packets.
All the company reports in The Value Line Investment Survey are grouped by industry, and at the front of each industry group is a one- or two-page Industry Report. The information contained in each Industry Report may differ considerably from one industry to another, but
there is a general format we follow. The number of industries followed in The Value Line
Investment Survey is constantly changing. As companies drop out, usually because of mergers or acquisitions, we may discontinue an industry. On the other hand, as new industries develop, we add them.
More information on page 13 of this document go into depth about Industry Sectors

Comparative rankings within 137 industries include: Revenues; Net income; Profit margins; Assets; Returns on equity; Returns on investment; Cash position; Evaluation of stock performance; Price/earning ratios; Yields; Mergent's short- and long-term price scores
Comparative statistics include: Key business ratios on industry groups; Table of comparative statistics;
Special ranking factors on specific industries include: Size of gross/net plant; Sales per dollar of gross; Return on net plant; Capital expenditures;
Standard and Poors Industry Surveys Index Table 1 East Side of Table
Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys are the fastest way to come up to speed on the players and events impacting over fifty (50) of the largest North American and global industries. Ideal for management consultants, strategic planners, money managers, public and academic librarians, students, and business faculty; Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys enable readers to think and act like industry insiders.
Beaverton does not actually subscribe to this quarterly, as it is released. The information inside is helpful to gain an understanding of the sectors, but the Multnomah County Library kindly donates one of these sets per year to us, and it's to be used with the understanding that if you want the current quarter, you could refer to Multnomah County Central Library for that.
Hoover's Handbook of Industry Profiles 2009 will be an item we are anticipating to purchase this year. It contains 300 industries.
Business and Company Resource Center does not do current sector analysis really, but it offers reports on hundreds and hundreds of individual lines of business. What do I mean? Whereas the products listed above will roll together several types of businesses into larger, more broad catagories, Business and Company Resource Center sticks to reports on each kind, each separate from the other. Example, they don't do an Energy Sector. They do a report on Petroleum Refining. There is a report on Coal Mining. A report on Natural Gas Liquid. A report on Petroleum Extraction. But not roll them together in a sector. And their reports are filled with lots of background on industries, whereas the reports above focus on investment oriented statistics.

Genealogy tool, Property history tool
One of the most versitile tools in the reference collection, Beaverton has also lovingly maintained a collection of these reverse directories going back to 1959. Back then, the company responsible for reverse directories in the Portland Beaverton metro area was called Polks. Look at an old Polks Portland city directory and take a step back in time.
